SUG Success

Lacrosse made its debut at this year's Southern University Games, and Adelaide University's lacrosse team performed the strongest out of the Blacks' contingent to Victoria in finishing with a silver medal.

In the lead up to the SUGs it looked like Adelaide Uni would not have the numbers to field a team, but a combination of last minute recruiting and quite possibly divine intervention led to the bare minimum numbers recruited to field a team. The Adelaide Uni team joined UniSA to share a minibus for the trek to Geelong, where many team mates, coming from several local lacrosse clubs (including AULC), were meeting each other for the first time.

The SUG lacrosse tournament was played over two days, with the first match a remotely fixtured derby against UniSA. Whether it was players getting to know each other, or some dustiness from the day (and night?) before, UniSA took the spoils with a margin of 15 goals to 11. However, the Blacks came to play in their second match of the day against Australian Catholic University, with a solid 17 goals to 9 victory, to finish Day 1 with a win and a loss.

Adelaide Uni started Day 2 of the tournament with a statement to the rest of the competition, as they defeated the highly rated Swinburne first team, winners of last year's national tournament, by 16 goals to 15. They then comfortably beat Swinburne's second team 15-8, to finish the round robin section with three wins and a loss and level with Swinburne (1) and UniSA. Goal differences led to Adelaide being seeded 2nd, with Swinburne (1) 1st and UniSA 3rd, with ACU 4th and Swinburne (2) finishing in 5th spot. This pitted Adelaide against UniSA in an all South Australian semi final match to meet either Swinburne of ACU in the gold medal game.

In an epic, see-sawing encounter, the Blacks broke UniSA hearts with a 13-12 victory, to set up a tantalising grand final against Swinburne, who thumped ACU 27-13 in their semi final.

The gold medal game was one for the ages. After being two goals down at half time, Adelaide Uni took the lead mid way through the second half, and held the edge until the final few minutes. The atmosphere was electric, and the contest was frantic, if a bit willing, before Swinburne put their foot on the pedal and stormed through for a a 15 - 13 defeat over the gallant Blacks. UniSA defeated ACU in the bronze medal match to ensure that two of the three podium spots went to SA teams. Congratulations to our Silver Medallists Angus Mills, Pia Emunds, Kane Johnson, James White and Clayton Burke! With most of this year's team being eligible again next year, and positive feedback of the Uni Games experience to feed back to the local lacrosse community, Adelaide Uni look forward to a genuine tilt towards gold at next year's competition!
