This week the Blacks ladies took on a young Forestville team in an early game at Marion. Everyone arrived in good spirits with plenty of time for a decent stretch and warm up which is always good for an early game. Big shout out to Hail Storm Hayley who is still suffering with a calf injury but has been out every game and every training to help spur us on. She has also been quick to help with injuries, giving out massages to all that need them, I certainly appreciated the shoulder rub down before the game!
The first quarter saw us trade buckets early, with Forestville leading 10-8 half way through the first, then we put our foot to the floor and went on a 13-0 run thanks to the injection of Dusty (Jas) and CJ (Stacey) into the line-up. We finished the first quarter up 25-13. Eager Beaver Dani and I tried to work in some new wheels but Dan decided the feeling in her feet was more important than new kicks…I however, persisted enjoying finally having some grip on my shoes!
The second quarter certainly wasn’t our best as we let Forestville knock down too many open looks, including 3, 3’s, to keep them within a sniff, although we still managed to hold a healthy lead, up 45-29 at the half.
Super coach Tuz made sure we knew we weren’t playing to our full potential at half time, and we came out in the third ready to fire. We put pressure on every play and picked up some quick fast break points to get the scoreboard ticking away again. Our favourite Pokemon Evie was taking it hard to the hole and getting rewarded for her efforts which was awesome to see. With a 30-12 third quarter everyone was up and about, and we pushed out to a 75-41 lead going into the final break.
The final quarter was by far our best, hitting the first 10 points without reply. They hit one tough 2 and from there we didn’t let them score again, going on a 15-0 run to finish the game with a 27-2 quarter. As seems to be my forte, I hit my straps in the last as the game opened up and managed a 14-point final quarter, capitalising on our great defence and running the floor (no, I was not cherry picking…).
Our spread of scorers was impressive with everyone playing an important role. Rex managed 2 points and hustled hard in defence, Dusty got another 10, Baby Huey Laura knocked down 14 (with the potential for plenty more), CJ and Pokemon had 15, Eager Beaver Dan had 18 and I finished with 28. We also managed to keep our hands out and had no one in foul trouble this week.
We have a bye next week, then we take on South, hoping to reverse the result from last time we met.
