Well as you can see from the score line, this week I am not so keen to do a write up…the main reason, I hate losing! But as we all know every loss should make us stronger, giving us the opportunity to learn and get better as a team. Also, I have come this far, I can’t disappoint my dedicated readers with only one game in the minor round to go.
We ventured to Marion this week to take on South in a battle for top spot. We prepared ourselves as per normal, including an interesting discussion as to how long Dani ‘Hairy Maclary’ Bator’s leg hairs had become...Alex Glen you would definitely be proud. Hail Storm Haylz again gave out massages and tapings as required. We’ll have to look after ourselves next week when she joins us back on the court, be great to have the ‘voice’ back out there though. We were keen not to make the same mistake as the men who unfortunately dropped the earlier game to South themselves. Thanks to the few dedicated souls, mainly Wise Wenz (although I think he did the Harold Holt when the game started), and The Chisel Disel, Scott Chislett for sticking around.
Unfortunately, we had a terrible start giving South a 4-12 lead early. We mounted a bit of a come back but were still down 9-17 at the end of the first, unable to capitalise on the many opportunities we created for ourselves much to Super Coach Tuz’s disgust.
The second quarter was more of the same, we missed our shots and they made theirs, until we finally found some momentum and started to claw our way back with some much more intense defence, the score 27-29 at the half.
In the third we came out firing, taking the lead up 34-30 forcing South into an early time out time out. From here we really should have gone on with it, but we just couldn’t get the ball in the hole, while at the other end they seemingly knocked down shots with ease. We gave up the lead and ended the quarter down 36-39 as they hit 3 on the buzzer.
With plenty left to give, I really thought we were a chance in the last. Scores were level at 50 all with a minute or so to go, but some costly turnovers and missed shots turned into quick points at the other end, ending the game in a 50-57 loss. Just to repeat my earlier sentiment, I hate losing! With the game done, Super Coach Tuz left the building!
As you’d expect with such a low score line no one really troubled the scorers. Baby Huey Laura had a hard time all night, the umpires definitely not her friend, fouling out without getting a score on the board – unheard of for our big girl. Looking forward to her flexing her muscles against them next time. Lexi Rex Atkins battled all night but found it hard to get an open look. We missed Dusty’s normal score line as she knocked down a nice 3, well below her average, and Adrienne ‘Rocky’ Worrell hustled hard on the boards and also came up with 3, including one of her trade mark running jumpers. Our favourite Pokemon Evie and myself, only managed 8 and 7 respectively, well below where we need to be for the team. Hairy MaClary knocked down 15, and Baywatch’s own CJ (aka Stacey) had 14. They were by far our best making some huge plays at both ends of the court to keep us in the hunt.
Looking forward to writing our wrongs in a couple of weeks time, but first, grudge match time. Time to have a good hard physical fight with Flinders. As always, looking forward to it already!
