Just like that, Round 24 sees the Blacks ladies play their last game of the minor round against Flinders University at Morphett Vale, finishing the season in second spot. While the game wasn’t going to affect our ladder position, we knew as a team we wanted to find some form for finals.

Clearly the umpires were eager to get home as they decided we would start the game early…well almost…after calling us in then they had to fiddle with the score bench…not phased, we began the game with some of our best basketball for a while, with intense defence and taking, and more importantly making, some good open looks, we were up 11-0 in a blink of an eye and the Flinders girls were asking me if we were after percentage….we finished the quarter up 25-6.

The second quarter saw us slip a little in defence as Flinders managed to put some scores on the board, luckily at the other end we managed to keep the scoreboard ticking, extending the lead to 24 at half time up 47-23.

I hit a purple patch in the third with a quick fire 10 points, and with a solid team effort with Dusty (Jaz), Adrienne ‘Rusty’ Worrell, Our Favourite Pokemon Evie, and Hairy Maclary Dani all hitting the scoreboard, we extended our lead to be up by 35 at three-quarter time, with the score 74-39.

The fourth saw us play around with some options and combinations and we managed to close out the game with an energetic 88-48 win.

While we had to tell our favourite Pokemon Evie to keep her Ver Jay Jay to herself as her favourite defensive move again threatened to get her in foul trouble, she adjusted well to cause havoc in defence and attacked hard in offence putting Flinders under all sorts of pressure, finishing with a handy 8, and showing signs she is ready to have a big game in the finals.

Haylz ‘The Voice’ Hailstorm made a welcome return, banging bodies and running hard, it was great to have her back on the court, finishing with 5 points. Lexi ‘Rex’ Atkins played some defence which had the Flinders guards nervous before they even got the ball, and then pushed the ball to create many opportunities for her team mates in offence.

Rusty and Dusty contributed well, finding some form with 8 points each. Stacey ‘CJ’ Franceschinis hustled hard all night for her 4 points but unfortunately fouled out the game early in the fourth. Baby Huey Laura (aka Husky), worked hard on the boards and made some big plays finishing with 5.

Hairy Maclary had another great game, grabbing some huge boards and knocking down 20 points, and myself, Tammy Turtle, found some form finishing with 29.

With the minor round done now we look to finals and call on all Blacks supporters! The Blacks ladies play at 7.30pm at Marion Basketball Stadium in a must-see game against South Adelaide Panthers, primed to show them what we can really do and earn a spot in the Grand Final. The Blacks men then play at 8.50pm against Sturt Sabres also at Marion, in a double header that was meant to be. Let’s make it a successful night for the club and get out and support the Division 1 Blacks teams in the first round of the finals! We need you!

I can’t wait. Go Blacks!
