The Div 5’s went into their clash at the Launchpad against the Warriors full of confidence, not least because the Warriors 0-4 record meant that players of the Steph, KD and Klay ilk were unlikely to be lining up for this Warriors outfit. Even the devastating news that social lives outside of the basketball club had claimed the availability of Splash Brother Bedi and Elliott “Highlight Reel” Richardson wasn’t enough to dent the confidence. There was also a late scratching from the 5’s with the stormy weather conditions of the outdoors precluding Atbin Sacrifice Yeganeh from playing an indoor ball sport.

The match started slowly, with the Griffins strong defence matched equally by our poor jump shooting. A bucket from Droopy six minutes in got the lads going and with Steamboat Steve Gowen pulling in another six by the end of the first quarter, the lads went into the quarter up 8-2. Whilst the offence didn’t click immediately, the defensive effort and O-boards pulled down by the lads was great, particularly from Damn-Yeet Sambhy and Benny ‘Most Improved’ Knuckey.

Despite the second quarter taking even longer for the lads to get stuck in (8-minutes to be precise), the lads managed to extend the lead out to 20-6 by the half on the back of some great team basketball with the scoring shared around. Writing this report 10-days after the game means I have zero recollection of what happened in this quarter - the only thing I can be certain of is that I personally had an exceptional quarter.

The distinct lack of memorable moments in the first half was completely juxtaposed (you might need to look that word up Tony) by the third quarter performance. Will Daniels, now comfortable with the six-shooters in hand, heated up and began draining mid-range jumpers on demand for the entirety of the second half, where he dropped all 15 of his points. The lads continued to clamp down defensively and kept the opposition to 12-points over the first 3-quarters, taking the score to 34-12 by the end of the third. On this rare occasion we were the 34.

At the final break we set ourselves the target to break 50-points and keep the opposition under 15. Clearly in this modern NBA era where centres shoot 3-pointers and the paint is lava, we managed to achieve our offensive target however we let the Warriors drop 25 on us. Regardless, it was good to break 50 for the second time in the season. The real highlight, like the third, was Will Daniel’s savagery from mid-range, with his rain-bringing efforts justifying Atbin’s respect for forecast weather conditions. The score ended 53-37 in favour of the people’s team.

Overall a good hit out from the lads, albeit against limited opposition. All contributed well and within the space of 6-weeks the team are playing some great team basketball in offence whilst the defensive effort is continuing to be consistently strong and intense (well at least for the first three anyway).

Apologies, I’m all out of jokes about individual efforts as I remember almost nothing about this game.
