After a weeks break with the bye, the Blacks Div 1 ladies headed to Morphett Vale to take on a new challenge in South. After a close game earlier in the season we knew this was going to be tight again as they brought in two handy guards to bolster their line-up.

The first quarter saw us start well on the back of a Pokemon 3 and Hail Storm 2, but South quickly countered, and the quarter ended with us up narrowly 12-10. Unfortunately, Baby Huey Laura had car troubles on the way to the game and only ran into the stadium at quarter time, she made an impact straight away though knocking down a strong 2 to start the second quarter. We got out to a quick 6-point lead in the second, but again it evaporated just as quick, this time turning into a 6 point deficit at half time with a 22-28 score line.

The third quarter saw us put on a bit of charge getting up by 2 and feeling good about our game. Momentum was on our side and our defence and offence was lifting. We ended the third quarter back even at 42-42.

The fourth quarter was tight, we got out to an early 4 point lead but again South locked us down and we traded buckets sitting at 54-54 going into the last minute…Unfortunately however we couldn’t find a bucket down the stretch, South hit a 3 and we then couldn’t convert down the other end, ending the game with a foul with 4 seconds to go. They hit both foul shots to blow the margin out to 5. We had one last ditch effort to change the margin but the time expired to no avail. With our first winter loss in a while it was a good learning curve for the Blacks ladies and something we need to build on and work to reverse next time we meet the Panthers. I’m already looking forward to the challenge. I HATE losing.

Despite the loss we had a good spread of scorers. Eager Beaver Dan, Baby Huey Laura (after missing a whole quarter) and Jazzy aka Dusty all hit 10. I scrounged out 9 (lets blame the cold affecting this old ducks bones…), Pokemon had 7 and Rex and Hail Storm both finished with 4. One positive this week is everyone managed to stay out of foul trouble (silver lining)! I think every single one of us knows we can and we will need to lift for the rest of the season, especially as we bid Dan fair well for a 3 week holiday to visit our much missed Alex Glen!

Next round we take on Flinders at Port Adelaide.

Go Blacks!
