Division 1 Men Round 2 vs South Adelaide - Defeated 68-65
In round 2, the Blacks division 1 men travelled to Morphett Vale stadium to take on the high scoring South Adelaide Panthers. If the pregame dunk competition was anything to go by, the boys were eager to stay undefeated! Sharp shooting guard/forward Toby Lightheart duly pointed out that 3s are worth more than dunks!
With the usual focus on defensive intensity and transition, the Blacks starting five looked to gain the ascendancy early. The first minutes of the game were played at an extremely high tempo with neither team able to find the bottom of the basket. Towards the end of the quarter, the usual suspects in Toby and Josh gained an advantage over their respective defenders and led the Blacks into the quarter break up 21-17.
The second term began with more of the same from your Blacks men, showing some great defensive endeavours. Oli leading the way in this regard with a huge work rate as he went on to have what would be his best game for the Blacks. We went into the major break leading 36 - 29.
After the half the panthers hit back, led by their athletic power forward Brad Pfitzner, who scored 10 points for the term. Although the Blacks shared the scoring load evenly, they were unable to keep pace with a high-octane Panther offence. The quarter ended with the Blacks clinging to a 1 point lead 51 - 50.
The final term began with some fantastic ball pressure by point guard Tim Summers as the Blacks buckled down for a furious finish. The pace and intensity in which the game had been played began to take a toll on all players, of whom only 7 of 15 managed to trouble the scorers in this quarter, with easy looks missed by both sides. Panthers guard Matt Wall hit a huge step back 3 to put them in the lead with 10 seconds to play (this would be the only 3 point shot hit by them all night). After a timeout, Toby was given a tough look at a 3 to tie the game, missing. Cameron took a huge offensive rebound in traffic to find Tim for another attempt at tying the game as the clock ran out.... Alas South Adelaide 68 defeated us 65.
