This week the Blacks ladies played in a double header with the men at Morphett Vale, the men getting the ball rolling with an impressive 88-74 win against the Southern Tigers. Even more impressive were the dedicated men who stuck around to watch our game as well, including Bobo who even made an appearance as a floor wiper – thank you!
The start of this winter season has seen the Blacks women squad over flowing in two teams, but on Tuesday night we had to dig deep with a depleted roster to get the win. Kamikaze Lexi unfortunately had to succumb to a nasty cold, sitting the game out but still making the effort to travel south to support the girls. Super Coach Tuz was also feeling less than his usual Snow White self, instead feeling more like Sleepy and in need of a good nights rest – as always however, he still managed to push us all game and come up with some handy plays to get us over the line.
To add to a less than ideal start, Jaz ‘Bee sting’ Moyle, and myself, Tammy ‘Turtle’ Walker, were late to the game as we were committed to watching our kids be football stars in the mini league for the West v South SANFL game. This meant we had left our team even more depleted than it already was…running in the door once the game had already started. Despite all this we started well, trading buckets with the young South team and we were up 20-15 at the end of the first quarter, with Eager Beaver Dani having a great start with 8 points.
The second quarter was by far our best, stretching the lead out to 40-29 and we looked like we were hitting our straps…that was until everyone’s favourite Pokemon Evie managed to pick up her 4th foul half way through the second quarter – with the risk of being a bit cringy – she had to be retired back into her Pokeball! We managed to hold onto a 42-36 lead at the half but as has been our flaw so far this season, we spent most of the first half in foul trouble, giving South way too many free shots from our slow feet and sloppy hands.
The third quarter was not our best, letting South draw even with us early and we again traded buckets from there. Our offense was working well but our defence showed it needs some significant improvement. The third quarter also saw our favourite Pokemon leave the game to visit Nurse Joy with 5 fouls, leaving us with only 2 on the bench going into the fourth, and holding onto a tight two-point lead, up 57-55.
In the last quarter we had to dig deep and managed to stretch the lead out to 7 following a nice shot from Yas ‘Tardy’ Gill, who finished the game with an important 8 points. Hail Storm Hayley and our big girl Baby Huey Laura were again huge on the boards, Laura finishing with a hard fought 12 points. Jess ‘Simon’ Gianquitto (from the Simon & Garfunkel fame) also made sure they felt her wrath with a couple of hard fouls to get herself onto the score sheet. Bee sting (aka Jaz who managed to get a bee sting on her foot sitting on a rug pre-game…) pushed through the pain and made some important buckets in the fourth, finishing the game 9 points. I finally found my range with 19 for the game, including a 3 to put us up by 8 with 2 minutes to play. South kept coming at us though, knocking down a couple of quick buckets before Eager Beaver Dani grabbed an important board and finished the put back to keep the margin at 4, Dani finishing with 17, and we got away with a hard-fought win, closing out the game 74-70.
Next challenge is our rival Uni in Flinders University. Go Blacks!
