Sporting clubs and events could not be run without amazing volunteers who give up their time because they love giving back to something they're passionate about. This week is National Volunteer Week, an annual celebration acknowledging the generous contribution of volunteers. We had a chat with our 2018 student volunteer of the year Courtney Donnellan from the Adelaide University Volleyball Club, and non-student volunteer of the year Helen Doufos from the Adelaide University Soccer Club, to discuss the benefits of volunteering and their achievements.
Courtney is most passionate about her achievements setting up a junior program for the Adelaide University Volleyball Club. "My greatest achievement would be establishing AUVC's junior program. Finally young athletes living in the CBD have a competitive volleyball pathway. The most rewarding part is being able to see the pride and sense of accomplishment my players develop throughout their journey."
Helen finds pleasure in helping others and making life easier for those already giving up their time. "I’m happy to help wherever and with whatever. The most rewarding feeling is making it easier for everyone else to do their job. For instance, if I organise new players uniforms it allows the coach to concentrate on coaching, and the player has their uniforms on time. Then they feel like they are part of the group straight away."
Helen's believes her greatest achievement is bringing people together. "I can say my greatest achievement is getting a small group of volunteers to help the club and run events like our pasta or pizza nights, or organising all the players uniforms. It has begun to feel like a small community of people who are like-minded, like to socialise, help each other and all the while working to raise funds for the club and to help it run smoothly."
We'd like to thank Courtney, Helen and all of our AU Sport and club volunteers for their amazing efforts every year. If you're an AU Student volunteering for one of our sporting clubs, we recommend you get involved with the Adelaide Graduate Award program developed by the Uni to increase employability through helping the community.
