Adelaide University Sport held its 121st AGM and a Council Meeting on the 27th of May with a fantastic turnout including 35 out of 36 clubs represented and close to 70 people in attendance. With Board elections being held and pizza in hand, the night of the AGM and Council Meeting was resounding success.
Michelle Wilson oversaw her first AGM as General Manager of Adelaide University Sport and reported last year's activities from Mike Daws' (now retired) report to a full house of club representatives. Highlights of 2018 for Adelaide University Sport included the establishment of a simplified tax deductible Sports Fund to the benefit of donors to University sports clubs, the success of the Roma’s women’s Rugby 7s team over the two years of the University Series, finishing 5th overall in 2018 from the 10 universities competing, and the subsequent positive effect of the program at both the local and national level, the signing of an attractive three year sponsorship agreement with Programmed Property Services, our groundstaff and maintenance provider and the finalisation of the Master Plan for Parks 10 and 12 to most effectively use the sport spaces within the North Parklands precinct.
In line with the Adelaide University Sport Constitution, four current members of the Adelaide University Sport Board were required to step down. This resulted in Noelle Smit, Patrick Ey and Chris McMichael all deciding to not renominate. Chris had joined the Board as a student rep a number of years ago and worked up to fill the position of Vice President. He was reluctant not to nominate again but as he will be moving interstate later in the year he felt it was best to step aside now.
There was great interest in who would replace this experienced group and nominations came from a diverse range of Adelaide University Sport members. Everyone seeking a nomination had the opportunity to present to the Board to members prior to voting. In the end, after a very tight counting process the successful nominations were Christopher Lehmann from Adelaide University Volleyball Club, David Penn from Adelaide University Cricket Club and current AU Sport President, Emily Baxendale from Adelaide University Water Ski Club and Adelaide University Mountain Club and Jackson Dearing, from Adelaide University Football Club.
They join current Board members Hayley Kroon (netball), Crispin Painter (sailing), April Zimmermann (touch football), Kosta Jaric (soccer), and the University of Adelaide Representative Michael Physick.
Jackson says "I nominated for a position on the Board because I've been a grateful beneficiary of many outstanding opportunities provided by Adelaide University Sport. This has motivated me to now contribute and give something back." He goes on to say "I looking forward to bring a fresh perspective of a student and young athlete, as well as sports administration experience which I have obtained by being involved with the Adelaide University Football Club Executive Committee. I look forward to helping drive the growth of AU Sport, in particular, the development of our presence on campus, our brand and student involvement."
