The sun was glistening down ANZAC Highway on Sunday the 15th of September for the 2019 Westpac City-Bay Fun Run. People could be seen setting up deck chairs in median strips, sitting on the side of the road with signs and banners supporting friends and family and just passing through watching curiously as an empty road slowly began to fill. It was a glorious sight as the first few University of Adelaide team members were spotted running towards Glenelg.
As participants ran through, clusters of our team members could be seen forming groups and running together with huge smiles on their faces. Intervarsity Events & Engagement Officer Thomas Sharpe loved our team atmosphere, particularly as we were involved in an athletic event that is generally not team based. “It was fantastic to see 310 University of Adelaide team members compete in this year’s race. It was a sea of black on the track, and it was great to hear from our athletes how good it was to see so many team shirts out there.”
Thomas was quick to highlight the importance of assistance from other factions of the University of Adelaide in organising our City-Bay team experience. “The event takes a lot of organising, and to see the final product is greatly satisfying. Thanks must also go to our External Relations team, Tania and Kerry as well as their amazing Volunteers for putting together such a welcoming Hub post-race, the Adelaide University Athletics Club for their running sessions in the lead up to the day and the Fitness Hub for their support.”
Diversity was prominent in our team with runners of all ages, abilities, backgrounds, shapes and sizes getting involved. It was heart warming to see parents running with their children in Adelaide University gear, and we were proud to see a plenty of alumni, staff and both local and international students on the race course. “There was a great mix of walkers, runners and rollers on the day, but a highlight was the post-race mingling at the University of Adelaide tent. With some fantastic weather, the athletes enjoyed a much deserved feed and even recovery sessions with our Fitness Hub staff member, Gavin.”
With City-Bay done and dusted in 2019, personal bests achieved and an enjoyable experience provided for all, Adelaide University Sport is keen to continue to improve on this event in the coming years. “We are already looking forward to 2020, where hopefully we can see everyone return and post some amazing times.”
