Adelaide University Sport were ecstatic for Simon Tolley Adelaide Hills to be involved with our events in 2019. Simon Tolley was our wine sponsor for the 111th annual Blues Awards, and provided the wine for the VIP section of the University of Adelaide Roma's home round of the Aon Uni7s series. Simon's range of delicious wines were praised by the Adelaide University Sport community at these events for their flavour and drinkability.

Getting involved with Adelaide University Sport was an easy decision for Simon.

"I'm an avid sports enthusiast and studied at the University of Adelaide. I really enjoyed watching the skills and courage of the Roma's girls earlier this year. It was amazing to see them perform to such a high standard in front of a home crowd. The Blues Awards is such a fun and special night, and it's great to be able to showcase our products to like-minded individuals who love their sport."

Simon reflects fondly on his time at the University of Adelaide as a student studying a Bachelor of Applied Science (Viticultural Science), particularly learning to balance study, sport and a social life.

"I enjoyed the challenge of university study, and also loved making new friends which led to a fun university social life. I continued playing sport while at university, but for an external club with friends I went to school with."

Simon's love of sport hasn't gone away since graduating from the University of Adelaide, evident though his partnership with Adelaide University Sport, and his family's involvement in sport.

"My children play school, local club and district sports, and I'm also involved with the local Onkaparinga Football Club as a runner for the A Grade, and also a committee member. It's great to still find ways to be involved with sport."

Simon not only produces delicious wine, but also provides accommodation at Simon Tolley Lodge in Woodside.

"It's a really unique experience. You're staying on a property surrounded by 56 acres of land including 32 acres of vineyard with picture-perfect Adelaide Hills towns close by with some of the best local produce in the country. The Lodge can hold up to 10 guests in its 5 bedrooms, so it can be a memorable escape for a group of friends or family."

Simon welcomes those in the Adelaide University Sport community to visit his vineyards in Woodside next time they're exploring the Adelaide Hills.
"I've met some great people at the Adelaide University Sport events I've been involved in and encourage everyone to come and learn more about the vineyard to bottle journey, and have a chat about sport."

Whilst Simon Tolley Wines envelopes his viticulture consulting business, his business largely depends on the success of his own personal vineyard, family vineyard and surrounding clients. Unfortunately, the 20th December Cudlee Creek fire has severely affected his business. The fire burnt through his own vineyard, clients vineyards and parts of his family vineyard, and subsequently smoke taint will mean that he has lost significant income and the need to source grapes from other vineyards. Furthermore, about 1/3 of his own vineyard will need to be cut back or pulled out to avoid eventual vine mortality.

To overcome the income loss from his vineyards, Simon will rely more than usual on his wine business. He is building a cellar door soon after 2020 vintage and plans to open late December this year. Until then, his focus is on-line wine sales and visitors to his luxurious accommodation. He will even provide a tasting of his wine selection, complimentary!
